Excitement, accomplishment, and potential are three words that probably best describe what you will experience in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Management (STEMM) at UW-Stout.

In Fall 2010, we opened our new science building, adding to an adjoining newly renovated science facility and existing technology and engineering laboratory buildings.

Spacious, accessible, and project-driven designs provide even greater capacity for faculty, students, and staff to teach, inspire, and discover. Through the venues of our Stout Discovery Center and Technology Transfer Institute college efforts often contribute to innovations having direct economic impact.

Within the University of Wisconsin system, WiSys Technology Foundation, and UW-Stout Discovery Center, STEMM College expertise and leadership are vital to research and development of new environmental and bio-medical advances, which are just two examples of exciting recent directions in this enterprise.

Drawing upon the expertise of a national network of polytechnic universities, we combine a continually growing body of academic knowledge with development of innovative applications, providing the foundation for programs of distinctive career focus, industrial connections, and research opportunities both here and abroad.

Our college faculty are accomplished professionals in their field, including several recipients of Fulbright, National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and UW system awards.

Faculty and student teams continue active programs of applied research and innovation, collaborating with a wide range of organizations from the private and public sectors.

Receiving similarly prestigious accolades for excellence in teaching, our faculty are enthusiastic and caring educators, focused on promoting the success of students both while at UW-Stout and beyond.

Program quality, student achievement, and strategic planning are regularly considered in programmatic and university accreditations, as well as in accordance with the Baldrige performance excellence criteria. Receiving the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2001, UW-Stout continues to extend the frontier of higher education reform towards the development of new academic models, responding to societal concerns, contributing to economic growth, and providing for academic success.

The resulting environment here is one where effective private industry practices and national higher education quality initiatives are brought together, providing the basis for our culture of planning, analysis of data, and academic excellence.

UW-Stout resides in a safe, rural area at the crossroads of open country within crucial ecological regions and diverse opportunities unique to big city environments.

Just a short drive to the east or west of UW-Stout are the urban and metropolitan communities of Eau Claire and Minneapolis-St. Paul. In either direction, immediately to the north or south, you’ll experience the beautiful Red Cedar and Chippewa River valleys.

Whether your purpose is industrial research, collaboration with academic colleagues, or a relaxing hike along the river, these are all possible either right in Menomonie or a nearby location.

Our STEMM College is truly a remarkable place where a multitude of opportunities and possibilities are brought together in synergy. We are committed to unlocking potential and inspiring innovation. I invite you to join us as a student, collaborator, or visitor and, perhaps, consider a future faculty, staff, or leadership role in STEMM at UW-Stout.
