Modality Information

 Modality Information

Diagram of course modality

Here are some definitions for each modality type:

  • In-person: intended to be taken in a physical classroom setting (online/distance technology may enhance but not replace in-person instruction)
  • Hybrid: a combination of in-person and online/distance instruction
  • Online asynchronous: 100% of instruction delivered online/distance, no in-person meetings required
  • Online synchronous: 100% of instruction delivered online/distance, with scheduled dates and times for online class meetings; no in-person meetings required

You can find more information about how your classes will be conducted by looking at “My Class Schedule” in your Access Stout Student Center.

  • Classes where the Room says “Online” are fully online.
  • Classes where the Room says “Online-Synchronous” are not taught in person, but students log into the class at the same days and times as the instructor.
  • Classes where the Room says an actual room number (such as “Harvey Hall RM 173”) are traditional in-person classes.
  • Classes with two meeting patterns in which one says "Hybrid" and the other has a room number are a blend of in-person and online modalities.

If a student is seeking online options, they are encouraged to connect with their advisor. Students may also contact their instructor to better understand the required in-person components for courses that are hybrid or in-person.

Factors considered for course modality included: building and classroom density reductions due to COVID, disciplinary content and the feasibility of the course content to be instructed remotely, ensuring that course changes would not impact time-to-degree completion, and faculty/staff medical accommodations.

Late Drop Fee

Effective summer 2012 students will be charged a fee of 15 dollars for dropping any class after the "Drop - Retain Record" deadline date. Follow this step by step guide to locate deadlines for dropping courses online.

Note: Students who drop after the 100% refund period may have tuition refunded per Student Business Services guidelines.

More information about add/drop dates, fees, waitlisting, and WU/U grades is also available.
