The Clery Act requires all institutions to collect crime reports from a variety of individuals and organizations.
These entities are considered to be Campus Security Authorities (CSA) under the law.
The law defines a CSA as: “An official of an institution who has significant responsibility for student and campus activities, including, but not limited to, student housing, student discipline, and campus judicial proceedings.”
Some examples of these roles include:
- Dean of Students staff
- Staff advisors of student organizations
- Athletic coaches
- Hall Directors
We understand that many staff and faculty have direct contact with students on a daily basis, but that does not meet the basic criteria of being a CSA. A single teaching faculty member or clerical staff are unlikely to have significant responsibility for student and campus activities, so they are not normally considered a CSA.
