UW-Stout offers placement and computer-based testing to accommodate student needs and assist advisors with course placement.

Placement Testing

The purpose of placement testing is to provide the university with information to place students in the correct courses based on their academic skills in particular subjects.

  • Placement tests are given in English, Mathematics, and Foreign Language.
  • All new students attending UW-Stout are required to take the UW-System Placement Tests. You do not need to take the placement tests at the UW school you are attending. You may take the tests at any UW-System Placement Testing site.
  • A non-refundable $30.00 placement testing fee will be charged to all new students' first tuition bill at the UW-System school they will be attending in the fall. 
  • Be sure to print off your payment confirmation when you register for testing.

Practice tests

What to bring

  • A couple number 2 pencils (no mechanical pencils)
  • A non-graphing calculator
  • An acceptable form of ID (driver's license, UW-Stout ID, passport)
  • The payment confirmation you printed off when you registered for the test

What you need to know

  • Arrive at the test site at least 10 minutes before your scheduled test time. Testing will start on time. There will be no late admittance to the test.
  • Each test takes an hour and a half. If you choose to take both the Math and English test plan on the testing take 3 hours with a break between the tests.

Computer-Based Testing

College Level Exam Program (CLEP)

CLEP exams allow you to earn UW-Stout college credit in subject areas you already know. Find out how!

  • You can earn between 3 and 16 credits based on your exam score for only $112 ($87 paid to CLEP, $25 paid to UW-Stout)

To take a CLEP exam:

  1. Go online to College Board website and pay for the exam you want to take.
    • CLEP Exams > Register for CLEP Exams > Select desired exam
  2. Call the Advisement Center at 715-232-1465 to schedule a time to take the exam.
  3. Study! Exam descriptions, study guides, and other information can be found on the College Board website.

Credit from CLEP:

  • Review the CLEP Exam/Course Equivalent Chart located on the UW Stout Prior Learing Credit website to determine which CLEP exams will transfer to UW-Stout. Students must score 50 or higher to receive credit.

Additional computer-based testing (DANTES/DSST)

UW-Stout offers DANTES/DSST testing. DANTES/DSST allows students to take examinations for college credit based on knowledge gained through independent study, advanced high school/non-credit adult courses, professional development, etc. DANTES/DSST exams cost $110 ($85 paid to DANTES/DSST, $25 paid to UW-Stout), but may be free to service members and veterans. Learn more about DANTES/DSST here.

Credit from DANTES/DSST:

  • Review the DANTES/DSST Course Equivalent Chart located on the UW Stout Prior Learing Credit website to determine which DANTES/DSST exams will transfer to UW-Stout. Students must score 400 or higher to receive credit.
