If you're a fun, caring, motivated person who loves working with teenagers, join us for one or two weeks at UW-Stout for the Summer STEAM Experience and the Junior STEAM Experience.

This year we are looking for Head Counselors, Counselors, and Teaching Assistants.  Learn more about these positions below.


Summer STEAM Experience

The 2022 Summer STEAM Experience is offering classes in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math featured in one week, June 12-16, 2022. Students entering grades 9 to 12 in fall 2022 are invited to explore career paths with UW-Stout faculty experts in a campus setting.

Junior STEAM Experience

A one-week camp for students entering grades 6 to 8 is set for June 19 - 23, 2022. Each day students will learn about a chosen track with hands-on activities, breaks, and time for fun activities.

Head Counselors

Head Counselors play an integral role in creating a fun and educational experience for the STEAM Experience campers. 

Head Counselors are responsible for the following:

  1. Leading the counselors during activities and training.
  2. Relaying messages to the Camp Director.
  3. Acting as a counselor with its duties as well. 
  4. Head Counselors will provide input on camp activities, campers, staff, and general camp-wide issues during a daily counselor meeting. 
  5. Head Counselors cannot also work as teaching assistants.

We are looking for people (18+) with previous camp experience and a wide range of skills who can work collaboratively and form connections.  Must be available to work during the spring semester. Pay is $750 plus room and board for the week of camp.

Responsible for:

  1. Supervise campers during the entirety of the camp.
  2. Work closely with your team of 10-12 campers.
  3. Serve as a role model, a mentor, and a leader.
  4. Serve as the health supervisor to your campers. (Training will be provided.)
  5. Oversee the safety of the group.
  6. Ensure campers are at their scheduled activity on time.
  7. Assist with planning and implementing designated camp activities as a team (e.g. volleyball, board games and crafts).
  8. Attend camp counselor training.
  9. Provide support as a mentor to encourage campers to engage in all activities.

We are looking for people (18+) with experience leading activities and who enjoy working with teens.  Necessary safety training will be provided.  Option to work for one or both weeks. Pay is $600 with room and board at UW-Stout, $75 raise for returning counselors (3-year cap).

Teaching Assistants

Responsible for:

  1. Assist and work closely with your faculty instructor - must have experience in that topic. See these pages for the list of tracks: Summer STEAM Experience, Junior STEAM Experience.
  2. Supervise campers during track instruction.
  3. Respond to student questions throughout the day.
  4. Serve as a role model, mentor, and leader.
  5. Report to the STEAM Outreach Program Manager any health or behavioral issues.

Time requirements are Monday - Thursday, June 13-16, or June 20-23 from 8:30 am - 4:15 pm.

Pay is $300.

Camp Photographer

Photographer duties include the following:

  1. Provide own camera. (Available for rent at Stout library.)
  2. Attend the various courses/activities for photographic opportunities for group and single shots.
  3. Create, edit, and maintain a collection of photos of campers/participants in their various learning and recreation activities.
  4. Upload each day’s output to an online folder for viewing by coordinators.
  5. Consult daily with program staff for suggestions on content or output.

Time requirements: 8 hours total to be spent June 12-16 and 19-23, 2022. Specific schedule to be set once hired.

Pay is $10/hour.
