 Erik A. Evensen is an Associate Professor of Design and director of the MFA in Design. His creative work, research, and teaching focus on the synthesis of illustration and visual communication design, specializing in design drawing, illustration, and concept art. He studied drawing & painting at the University of New Hampshire and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and holds an MFA in Visual Communication Design from Ohio State University.
Prior to entering academia, Professor Evensen spent several years practicing graphic design and illustration in agency, in-house, and freelance settings, specializing in advertising, branding, publication, and digital illustration. His comics work includes anthology stories in the "Ghostbusters" and "Back to the Future" comic series from IDW Publishing. His Xeric-winning graphic novel, "Gods of Asgard," has been featured and sold at the Field Museum of Natural History and the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, and adopted as a textbook at James Madison University, Purdue University, Marshall University, and Gustavus Adolphus College. Other creative work has been featured at AV Club, Twitch, Nerdist, Geek & Sundry, Graphic Novel Reporter, and the Washington Post, and recognized in Graphic Design USA.
Erik is a member of AIGA and IDSA, and a founding member of the Comics Studies Society. He has presented nationally and internationally, and reviewed for academic conferences sponsored by the Design and Emotion Society, IASDR, MODE Summit, and AIGA. His graduate research on educational board game design is a featured case study in the textbook, "Convivial Toolbox: Generative Research for the Front End of Design," by Elizabeth B.-N. Sanders and Pieter Jan Stappers.
