Graphic communications students garner seven Gutenberg Awards

UW-Stout earns three first-place honors

University of Wisconsin-Stout current graphic communications students and alumni earned seven Gutenberg Awards, including three first-place honors from the Graphic Communications Education Association.

The Gutenberg Awards recognize exceptional achievement by students in North America in the field of graphics, particularly for academic projects in printed items, web design and development and photography.

UW-Stout graphic communications seniors Jeff Thones, at left, and Avery Rueckheim complete an offset printing press run for the UW-Stout Journal of Student Research publication. They were part of a team that earned a first-place award for excellence at an annual printing competition sponsored by the Graphic Communications Education Association.

UW-Stout’s first-place awards given last summer included:

Shelby Kannel for demonstrated excellence in lithography process color. The entry was for the 2018-19 UW-Stout graphic communications promotional calendar.

Matthew Sweeney, Tea Eggert, senior of St. Paul, Xa Van Her, Samuel Kutchera, Katrina Smith, senior of Kenosha, for demonstrated excellence in lithography, process color, group. The entry was for the 2018-19 UW-Eau Claire NOTA Magazine, semester two.

McKenzie Brogan, senior of Scandia, Minn., Jeffrey Thoenes, Avery Rueckheim, Alexis Fordan, Megan Miller, for demonstrated excellence in pre-press/electronic design, the 2019 UW-Stout Journal of Student Research book.

UW-Stout received second-place awards for:

Laura Schneider, Kannell, Julia Ward, Sheyanne Eliason, Nragu Oo “Adam” Yaj, Nick Siegel and Jordan Murphy, for demonstrated excellence in lithography, process color, 2018-19 UW-Eau Claire NOTA Magazine, semester one.

Haley Meszaros, senior, McHenry, Ill., Brogan and GCOM publication production students for demonstrated excellence in pre-press/electronic design, UW-Stout’s Graphic Communications Outreach Magazine, spring 2019 edition.

Third-place awards included:

Eliason, pre-press/electronic design, Luther Park Bible Camp promotional booklet.

Sweeney, Eggert, Her, Kutchera, Smith, pre-press/electronic design, UW-Stout’s School Counseling Master of Science promotional sheet.

Mike Stinnett, founder of the Gutenberg Awards, said in a press release the award is about recognizing students. “Today’s students are producing incredible work, far beyond the work of those when we started 30 years ago,” he noted.

GCEA is a collaborative professional organization in partnership with industry, dedicated to sharing theories, principles and practices related to graphic communications.
